Around Edmond: Heard on Hurd to host 1st ever Scavenger Hunt August 18! Shop Edmond News from Paper Arts, EAI and Serendipity Market! Local Edmond with Oops I Arted!
Hi everyone!
Is it just me, or did this summer just fly by, faster than years past? I’ve noticed so many either took a break from social media and/or more people opted for vacations and for a longer period of time this year. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I don’t think constant connection is always great.
I am proud of the new issue which will drop around Edmond this weekend! I am in final production of the next issue now, and I hope you enjoy this new issue. If you’d like to take a look at it now, click here or on the cover to read the digital edition!
I haven’t traveled anywhere this summer but was busy quietly moving toward my personal goal of losing 150 lbs., with my first goal of losing 100 lbs within 1 year coming just after a final dental surgery this June. As of today, I am down 115 lbs. and am so thrilled with this accomplishment, as it was really painful, :). My next goal is to become stronger, and to be able to race a 10K in next year’s Memorial Marathon.
Because of my goal and this unexpected necessary weight loss, I have had more and more people asking me what I was doing, and how I was doing it. For me, my weapon was eating only fresh food, no salt and minimal sugar, no carbonated drinks at all for a year, and then implementing the tools I had been given 11 years ago from my ex trainer Chris Marlatt.
The basics we started with in 2007 were enough for me to start right where I stood and that’s the mindset I started with and continued without excuses, complaining, and crazy for me, no social sharing. This was my attempt not to seek public acceptance but my own validation from myself.
And so, in checking out the development going on around town I noticed a behemoth fitness center opening and decided to help out local residents and connect them to smaller more personal fitness providers and studios, where I personally believe you may receive more personal support and feeling of connection to your local community.
Keep your eye out for a new editorial series this fall called GetFitOK. Hopefully the professionals that are featured can help any of you who are looking for help to get started, find a fitness home that you are comfortable with, no matter your current situation, age or fitness level.
Also, I had issues with my old camera and my new camera just arrived so be sure to follow along at Instagram as I head out to see what’s new in and around Edmond this Fall for you and your homes!

Citizens Bank of Edmond’s Heard on Hurd Throws Back to School Bash
Scavenger Hunt, Children’s Safety Village, Project Princess, Live Music and More!
Citizens Bank of Edmond’s Heard on Hurd is returning to the streets of downtown Edmond, August 18th from 6 -10 pm, to celebrate back to school in style.
Citizens Bank of Edmond will be hosting the first Heard on Hurd Scavenger Hunt! Interested participants are advised to watch Citizen’s Bank of Edmond and Heard on Hurd social media channels for the release of further details and wonderful prizes.
“We always anticipate the August Heard on Hurd because the beginning of the school year reminds us how important it is to invest in our local schools,” said Citizens Bank of Edmond’s President and CEO and Heard on Hurd visionary, Jill Castilla. “Supporting our community and education have been the driving factor behind the festival and we are able to highlight the importance of giving back to education by donating a percentage of all Heard on Hurd t-shirt and alcohol seasonal sales to benefit Edmond Public Schools.”
The Edmond Fire Department will be bringing the mobile Children’s Safety Village inside of the barricades of Heard on Hurd. This exciting and interactive concept is designed for kids of all ages to learn that fires and injuries are understandable, predictable, and almost always preventable.
To learn more about upcoming classes and events, please visit Children’s Safety Village.
The August event will welcome food vendors for all taste palates including The Brown’s Kitchen, Phill Me Up Cheesesteaks, Let’s Do Greek, C’est Si Bon, Klemm’s Smoke Haus, Wicked Hangry, Oh My Gogi, The Fried Taco, Saucee Sicilian, Mighty Corndog, Nicks Tamales, Yum Pig, The Meating Place, and many many more.
Visit Trading Post on Hurd to satisfy all your shopping needs from local vendors 31 Mugs, Lahoma Threads, 405 Mobile Boutique, Wooden Lace, Dust Bowl Tough T-Shirts, Cargo Room, FlowFox Designs and others.
The Heard on Hurd Stage will be alive with local talent from 6 pm to 10 pm. Ciara Brook will take the stage at 6 pm, followed by Johnny Manchild at 7:20 pm, and Jared Deck will headline at 8:40 pm.
Opening up the evening is Ciara Brooke, who is a native Oklahoma pop singer/songwriter, who has competed in various talent competitions such as American Idol, American Kids, and America’s Most Talented Kids. Brooke also just finished recording her first full length album in Los Angeles. This local talent has such a raw talent that you can’t get enough of.
Second to take the stage is Johnny Manchild, who performs as a six piece Alternative Piano Rock band from Oklahoma City. The music pulls from multiple genres, combining bright trumpets and grooving drums, shredding guitar and ripping bass, and temperamental piano creating a unique sound that will certainly “rock the block”.
The headlining act for the evening will be Americana artist, Jared Deck. Raised on a family farm in the small town of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Deck has overcome many challenging years to be where he is today. With musical influencers like John Fullbright, Parker Millsap, and Turnpike Troubadours, Deck is definitely one you don’t want to miss.
Make sure to visit Project Princess for all of your favorite princesses and characters in the Bank lobby at 1 E. 1st St.
Don’t forget that several of your favorite downtown Edmond businesses stay open late during Heard on Hurd Saturdays. Visit the Downtown Edmond Business Association for the complete list of places to Shop and Eat.
