Hi everyone, the results of your nominations and poll votes are in, and after 14,910 unique votes were cast, we are revealing who your favorite businesses were in 2023!

In November, after the inaugural Deck the Downtown event that lit up Downtown Edmond, I decided after speaking to my husband about the event and everything happening in and around the Downtown Edmond district to give a first-time award to Stephanie Carel, co-owner of Silver Leaf Gems on Campbell Street and Broadway, President of the Downtown Edmond Business Association, who went above and beyond with her advocacy of small businesses, along with the constant help of Michelle Shaefer.

The two women, along with other DEBA members, advocated for Downtown Edmond businesses more so than any other district in the entire Metro in 2023 – during record-breaking Downtown District growth.  During the entire 14 years I have run EdmondActive, I have never seen such vigorous advocacy for independent and small businesses from any organization in our area. It was inspiring to me, reminded me of why I do what I do, and culminated in November with the most fun event to kick off Christmas I have witnessed in the 18 years of living in our wonderful city.  To me, it rivaled the first event of Heard on Hurd in its significance.

Stephanie’s hard work can be seen at almost every level of the Downtown Edmond area, including spearheading collaborative efforts between businesses and the City of Edmond, which resulted in the hiring of a new City liaison who will work with developers and businesses to navigate the explosive development happening in Edmond. When I called to tell Stephanie of this 1st-time distinction, Stephanie elaborated on the feelings of every single independently owned business owner on why they are running their locally owned businesses. Without saying a word though, Stephanie’s actions proved her heart was in it, this particular year, making Stephanie Carel EdmondActive’s first Community Advocate of the Year, an editor’s distinction.

“You can’t spend this much time working on something without loving what you do. What I do, it is a labor of love.” – Stephanie Carel President of DEBA and co-owner of Silver Leaf Gems

And! Stephanie was selected to receive the Citizen’s Bank of Edmond Citizen of the Year award during the February Edmond Chamber Awards Ceremony, and it was well deserved!
