Amplify: THUNDER CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
Team hosts inaugural Women in Business Summit, game night activities, and community events
In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Oklahoma City Thunder will host its inaugural Women in Business Summit along with special game night guests and community events to mark the occasion.
Monday, March 6, the Thunder will host a special Women’s History Month Reading Time Out, presented by American Fidelity Assurance Company. Thunder broadcast and digital reporter Paris Lawson will read Brittany Cooper’s “Stand Up! 10 Mighty Women Who Made A Change” to students at James L Dennis Elementary.
The Women in Business Summit scheduled for Tuesday, March 14, 12 – 3 p.m. features inspiring presentations from women in leadership and non-traditional roles. Scheduled speakers include Danette Leighton, CEO of the Women’s Sports Foundation and former CMO of the Sacramento Kings and Pac-12 Conference; Claudia San Pedro, president of Sonic Drive-In; Erika Lucas, founder of StitchCrew and VEST which were created to build a more inclusive and equitable economy through entrepreneurship; Paris Lawson; and Dr. Vanessa Brooks, Thunder physical therapist and athletic trainer and the first Black woman to hold this dual certification in the NBA.
Registration is $60 and includes a t-shirt and ticket to the evening’s Thunder game against the Brooklyn Nets.
Also on March 14, the Thunder will host the Stillwater High School girls’ basketball team and family of Kendra Kilpatrick, the team’s coach who passed away from breast cancer in November. Kilpatrick served as an inspiration through her journey, staying on the sidelines as head coach, even as she missed practices, and games as she underwent treatment. She led Stillwater to the state tournament in 2022 and was named the Oklahoma Girls’ Basketball coaches association Coach of the Year.
During the month, the Thunder is also featuring content on its channels that recognize the contributions of its 83 full-time female staff members including an insightful one-on-one conversation between Paris Lawson and former WNBA player and coach, and current Thunder broadcaster Nancy Lieberman. Nicknamed “Lady Magic,” Lieberman has been inducted into four halls of fame including the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
